YO, Check It Out!! (The First Edition)

I have been meaning to do this for a while, you know. I'm just now tackling my laziness and actually doing it. So, this is a list of everything I have come across in the past few weeks or so that I think are interesting/important/worth your time to check out.

1.) Andrea Gibson. I have boasted about her a few times on Flickr but I just cannot say enough about her. She is a poet and activist that tackles issues like war, rape, and patriarchy with such force in her work. Every word that comes out of her mouth is sure to make you pause in awe of her brilliance. Two of my favorite poems of hers are Blue Blanket and For Eli. To see her perform is even better though, so I suggest visiting her myspace or youtube.

2.) Postcards From Yo Momma. Thanks to Oprah magazine (yes, I have a subscription), I discovered a website called Postcards From Yo Momma. The website, to which people send funny emails & messages they received from their mothers, is sure to make you laugh. Definitely a good time waster, as it is updated frequently.

3.)Indexed. Indexed, site updated "as the coffee brews" every week day. Using index cards, Jessica Hagy makes statements and comparisons you otherwise would not think of. My daily reaction to her project is usually something like "hmph."

4.) The Trouble with Spikol. Liz Spikol, who I openly admit to having a small crush on, writes a column for Philadelphia Weekly called The Trouble with Spikol. Through the column she documents her struggle with Bipolar Disorder and depression, while simultaneously raising awareness. She also has a youtube channel, on which she makes cute videos discussing anything from medications to Parisian lipstick.

Another edition of YO, check it out! coming your way soon.

Oh My freaking God Kristin! Thank you so much for introducing me to such an amazing artist. I just read blue blanket and can honestly say that her words are captivating because they are so raw and real.
It makes me so angry to even read about it because you know it is happening out there and in here and everywhere and yet it seems no one does anything about it. But reading such a powerful statement makes me just as angry, but fuels my desire to do something to change the world. I just love it. Definitely will be checking more of her out!

See why you should most definitely blog? <3

Kristin - this feature is great. I hope you keep this up, and maybe once I get the internet I will have something to show you in return.
